He was committed to the experimental method of science. This greatly annoyed Isaac Newton who firmly believed that ideas in science should be tested and only accepted if their usefulness could be demonstrated. Isaac’s knowledge of the Bible continued to impress those around him.Īt that time the ideas of the ancient Greek scholars still dominated what was taught in science, and recent scientific discoveries were largely ignored. As he was unable to afford the tuition fees, he worked many hours each day serving meals and doing other jobs for the professors in order to pay his way. Isaac then went to Trinity College at Cambridge University with the intention of becoming a Church of England minister. Teachers and other students were impressed with the boy’s knowledge of the Bible. When King’s College offered to waive tuition fees because of his ability and poor circumstances, Isaac returned and completed his schooling. However, Isaac missed his studies greatly and his mother recognized this. ![]() Isaac was taken out of school to run the family farm to support his mother and her three younger children. Isaac’s mother was widowed for the second time when he was 14 years old. Not only were these in exactly the right proportions, but all of the moving parts actually worked. Rather than playing outdoor games as a boy, he preferred to make models of such things as windmills and carts. Isaac attended school at King’s College in nearby Grantham. He eagerly read books from his stepfather’ well-stocked library, in addition to reading the Bible regularly. As he grew, however, he visited his mother frequently. Several years later, his mother married the minister from nearby North Witham, but Isaac remained at Woolthorpe with his grandmother. Even with the help of her own mother, she had difficulty caring for Isaac in addition to running their farm while the Civil War in England raged around them. His mother had become a widow two months before Isaac was born. But Isaac’s first few years were a struggle. Gradually, however, he gained strength to survive. On that cold winter night, the sick, premature baby seemed unlikely to live. Isaac Newton was born at Woolthorpe, Lincolnshire, England on Christmas Day 1642. Less well known is his deep belief in God and his conviction that scientific investigation leads to a greater knowledge of God the Creator of the universe. Isaac Newton is well known as one of the greatest scientists who ever lived. However, Halley was aware of Newton’s genius and the revolutionary nature of his discoveries, so he decided to publish his results in manuscript form on his account.Sir Isaac Newton (1642/3–1727): A Scientific Genius To avoid further humiliation, Newton excluded himself from society and worked alone. For several years before, Hook had stolen his work on light. Isaac had kept his research secret, however. He had shown that this force, called the gravitational force, decreased with the square of the distance. All the movements of the Earth, Moon, and planets are explained in a treatise. ![]() To his surprise, Newton had solved the question five years earlier. Halley then went to Cambridge to submit the problem to Newton. Hook, a great scientist, tried to explain it but failed. He submitted the problem to the famous mathematician Robert Hook, a member of the Royal Society, an English Academy of Sciences. He wanted to explain it with mathematical formulas. But he did not understand the force responsible for these movements around the sun. Halley, who gave his name to a comet, realized that the planets in the solar system orbit the sun in an elliptical path. For the record, London scientists had been working on this issue for a long time.
